Celebrate Cynthia Bonta’s 80th and Lillian Galedo’s 70th birthdays
A fundraiser for the 2018 campaign for rent control in Alameda, CA
Cynthia & Lillian have been friends for more than 40 years. We met at the Filipino People’s Far West Convention at UC Berkeley in 1975. Since then we have collaborated on many campaigns like advocating for an accurate history of Filipinos in California’s high school curriculum (we lost); ending Martial Law in the Philippines (won this one). In 2016 we campaigned for rent control in Alameda where renters are 55% of residents. According to the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, between 2014 & 2016 rent in Alameda for a 1-bedroom unit rose by 64% and 51% for a 2-bedroom unit -while wages remained flat. Landlords spent $650k to defeat rent control in Alameda vs. the $30k rent control advocates spent.
Recently, Alameda landlords announced their plans to raise $2 million to block rent control / just cause eviction and defeat progressive candidates for Alameda’s City Council in 2018. See: “Alameda Landlords Seek to Recapture City Hall”
Please help us celebrate our birthdays by raising funds to support the rent control work of Alameda Renters Coalition (ARC) and Filipino Advocates for Justice (FAJ). Join us.
